The Janus programme works intensively on a one-to-one basis with young people aged 10-17 years, who are living in the community or within the care system, and whose behaviour is challenging, posing a risk to either themselves or to others.
Extern provides an individually-tailored support programme in response to the needs of these young people to support them to remain at home or at the lowest level within the care system.
The project is aimed at improving young people’s social functioning, community inclusion and family relationships.
Programme content:
- While on the programme, young people will be offered a range of sessions including special interest activities, day trips and specific individual work.
- The programme provides a number of respite overnights to focus on independent living skills, social skills development, provision of respite and problem solving approaches (both planned and responsive).
Janus works at the young person’s pace to build upon their personal attributes and undeveloped potential. The project operates within an interagency model of work, connecting interventions within a holistic model inclusive of school and local community supports, making the young person aware of this approach.
890 young people were supported through our Janus programmes in 2020
Staff liaise closely with primary care-givers and involve them in the contract setting and also utilise the strengths of primary carers (and, where appropriate, extended carers) to build a package of support for the young person.
The project workers within the Janus project not only provide specific intervention with the young person referred, but also provide support to their family.
The main purpose of supports provided is to empower parents to become confident and competent in their parental role.
Emphasis is placed upon the fact that services are there to provide support in developing parental skills, leading to eventual withdrawal for the need of support services.
