Supporting Children & Families
Southside Youth Initiative

Extern provides a range of programmes across the island of Ireland working with children and young people aged between 8 and 18. Our programmes range from early intervention and prevention, diversion through to working with children within the care system.

The Southside Youth Intiative is based in Limerick City and is a community based youth crime prevention initiative which primarily seeks to divert young people who have been involved in anti-social and/or criminal behaviour. Through the project we work with young people to challenge their behaviour through providing suitable alternative activities that facilitate personal development, promote civic responsibility and improve long-term employability prospects. The project also works with young people who are significantly at risk of becoming involved in anti-social and/or criminal behaviour. The project is funded by the Community Programmes Unit of the Irish Youth Justice Service (IYJS), Department of Justice and Equality and the European Social Fund.

“Extern has helped me to keep out of trouble and I am able to make better decisions about things that might affect me and others.”
