Charlie Mack, CEO

Charlie Mack was appointed CEO of Extern in July 2013.

He previously held the posts of Group Director and NI Director at the Royal National Institute of Blind People. Prior to this he worked in the statutory and international private sectors in England until taking up a career in the voluntary sector in NI. He was also a senior manager in the NI Council for Integrated Education and the National Trust. He completed his MBA at this time and won a prestigious scholarship for voluntary sector management at Boston College, USA.

He holds the certificate of the Institute of Directors and is a Non Executive Director of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. He was previously a Committee Chair at the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.












Dr Gavin Adams, Director of Business Development


Gavin Adams joined Extern in April 2014 as Director of Business Development. Gavin was formerly Senior Manager for Business Development with the Royal National Institute of Blind People, where he led on fundraising, finance, public affairs, retail and communications/marketing functions across Northern Ireland.

Gavin has twenty years of voluntary sector experience. Previously he was Head of Programmes with the Big Lottery Fund where he managed the assessment of funding applications, existing grants and the development of new funding programmes. Gavin has a passion for the voluntary sector and is currently a non-executive Director of Ulster Supported Employment Limited - which provides employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities.

Gavin's experience in substantial income generation is exactly what EXTERN needs to achieve our ambitious plans for growth. Gavin will lead on all aspects of marketing and communications.












Dr Joan Broder, Director of Supporting Families

Joan’s working career began as an Executive Officer within the Civil Service in Dublin. She then left to attend university and follow her path of becoming a social worker.

Following university she became a volunteer with Simon Community and Extern in Belfast. In 1985 Joan received a Masters in Social Work from Nottingham University. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s she was involved in mediation and victim support work. In 2001 she achieved a Ph.D. which focused on the introduction of mediation to NI.

Joan has been employed by Extern since 1980 and has had a variety of posts in children and adult services within the organisation. During this period she was seconded to the Probation Board for NI in its training department for 4 years. She is currently Extern’s Director of Supporting Families across the island of Ireland.












Danny McQuillan, Director of Safer Communities & Homelessness

Danny McQuillan joined Extern in March 2014 as Director of Safer Communities and Homelessness. He was formerly Director of Positive Life - Northern Ireland's only voluntary sector organisation providing dedicated support to all people affected by HIV. Prior to leading Positive Life his roles included Head of Development for the Multiple Sclerosis Society NI and Area Manager with the Alzheimer’s Society.

For over twenty years Danny has worked in the community and voluntary sector holding a variety of positions both voluntarily and in paid capacities. In his new role as Director of Safer Communities and Homelessness, Danny will draw on his particular areas of expertise which include service development and delivery, service commissioning and quality assurance, policy development, public relations, fundraising and social media development. As a Director and business leader he is experienced in driving positive organisational change and fostering a culture of strategic improvement.

He has a track record of making positive impacts for service users within the voluntary and community sector. For example he was responsible for securing improvements through the Elder Abuse Advocacy project, and for the development of the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Advocacy service. Both achievements demonstrate his keen interest in the role of advocacy, developing volunteering and personal and public involvement.












Trevor Wright, Director of Business Improvement

Trevor Wright has been with Extern since 2008 initially as Quality Assurance Manager when he supported the organisation’s first accreditation for the European Framework for Quality Management Steps to Excellence Award and IIP Bronze accreditation in 2010. More recently Trevor was appointed as Director for Business Improvement overseeing core areas of HR, Practice Learning and Support Services and holding the remit for Building Skills within the organisation. Trevor also line manages the Extern Works Project which provides a range of training to people who are affected by homelessness and people who have offended, including essential and soft skills through to vocational qualifications. Trevor will be focusing on developing Extern’s methods for measuring outcomes and impacts, risk management and supporting skills development as we move towards re-accreditation for IIP.

Prior to working with Extern Trevor was with the Bryson Charitable Group for twenty years and managed Bryson’s employability programmes (ACE and New Deal) from 1995 onwards. As Senior Development Manager he was responsible for the Bryson School’s Environmental Education Programme, the Better Belfast Landfill Tax Credit Grant Scheme, a Community Safety Scheme with Belfast City Council and development of Bryson’s Arc Direct Social Economy project. Trevor played an integral role in the development of Bryson’s training and quality programmes.

Trevor has served on the Boards of the Social Economy Network and NI Union for Supported Employment and is currently a Board member for the Rainbow Health project. Trevor is a graduate of Queen’s University with a Masters in Organisation and Management and recently completed the Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Investment at University of Ulster. Trevor is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. In 2001 he was appointed a MBE for services to the disadvantaged.
