Supporting Children & Families
Strength 2 Strength

Extern provides a range of programmes across the island of Ireland working with children and young people aged between 8 and 18. Our programmes range from early intervention and prevention, diversion through to working with children within the care system.

The Strength to Strength Programme was established in 2008 and provides early intervention and support to children aged 8-13 and their families. The project is funded by the Health and Social Care Board as part of the Early Intervention Strategy. The S2S Programme is centred on key features which contribute significantly to improving overall outcomes.

A typical programme will provide individual work with young people, family work, social and developmental group work including the education accredited ASDAN model, experiential learning, skills acquisition, educational support, family day trips, community orientation and positive pro social role modelling. A strengths and resiliency based methodology which supports and encourages young people to develop a sense of self and self-efficacy, helping to develop coping strategies and build self-esteem.

The S2S Programme operates within a multi-agency approach with regard to a range of individual referral pathways, e.g. Trust Resource Panels, PSNI, Education Welfare Service, Teachers, CAMHS, Medical services, such as GPs and Health Visitors, Family HUB and self-referrals directly from families. The Programme operates in the South-Eastern Health and Social Care Trust and Western Health and Social Care Trust areas.
