Addressing Homelessness
Homeless Support Team

When Extern started in 1978, its main purpose focused on addressing issues on homelessness. We continue to provide support to people who are affected by homelessness.

The Multi-Disciplinary Homeless Support Team started in 1998 and is located in Belfast City Centre. People who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are supported through a range of interventions aligned to their individual needs. This can include signposting to other services, identifying and supporting access to community services through to intermediate and long-term interventions that support people to find permanent accommodation and live independently in the community.
The project works with over 1400 people in the greater Belfast area every year.
Projects operational within the MDHST include:

Floating Support Team
Tenancy Support (Alcohol) Team
Accommodation Support (IV Drugs) Team

These programmes are supported by funding from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Public Health Agency and Supporting People.

"When I became homeless I had no idea what to do or where to go. The Homeless Support Team not only helped me with advice and guidance, but they also helped me to keep going when things looked really hopeless. Now that I am back in a flat they are continuing to support me until I get back on my feet again."
